When it comes to replacing a boiler, one of the most important decisions isn’t which brand to choose but which type of boiler is right for your home. The three main types each suit different properties and usage patterns.
Combi boilers
A combi (combination) boiler provides central heating and instant hot water from a single unit, with no need for a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank in the loft. Hot water is heated on demand as you open a tap.
Combis are ideal for smaller homes and flats with one or two bathrooms. They’re space-efficient and generally less expensive to install. The limitation is that they can struggle to maintain good pressure if multiple hot water outlets are used simultaneously, so they’re less suited to larger households.
System boilers
A system boiler works with a hot water storage cylinder. It heats water and stores it ready for use, meaning you can run multiple showers or taps at the same time without pressure dropping. The boiler itself is compact because the expansion vessel and pump are built in.
System boilers suit medium to large homes with more than one bathroom and higher hot water demand.
Conventional (regular) boilers
A conventional or heat-only boiler requires both a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. These are commonly found in older properties where the system was originally designed this way. In many cases when replacing one, a system or combi boiler is a more practical modern alternative, though sometimes a like-for-like replacement is the right call.
Which is right for you?
The answer depends on your home’s size, the number of bathrooms, your hot water usage patterns and what pipework is already in place. It’s genuinely worth having an engineer assess your specific situation rather than just replacing like for like if the existing setup isn’t working well for you.
Our team will assess your home and recommend the right boiler type and model for your needs. We install across Birmingham and Solihull and are happy to walk you through the options with no pressure to commit.
