Heat pumps are getting a lot of attention right now, driven by government incentives and a push toward lower-carbon heating. But there’s still a lot of confusion about what they actually are, how they work in practice and whether they’re a realistic option for a typical Birmingham or Solihull home.
What a heat pump actually does
A heat pump doesn’t generate heat by burning fuel. Instead, it extracts heat energy from the outside air (or in some cases the ground) and transfers it into your home. It works on the same principle as a refrigerator, just in reverse.
Even on a cold day, there is usable heat energy in the outside air. The heat pump absorbs this, compresses it to raise the temperature further and then circulates it through your heating system. Because it’s moving heat rather than creating it, a heat pump can produce more heat energy than the electrical energy it uses to run.
Air source vs ground source
The two main types are:
- Air source heat pumps (ASHP): Extract heat from outdoor air. These are the most common type for domestic properties. The external unit looks similar to an air conditioning unit.
- Ground source heat pumps (GSHP): Extract heat from the ground via buried pipes. More efficient but require significant outdoor space for the pipe loops and higher upfront costs.
For most homes in Birmingham and Solihull, an air source heat pump is the more practical option.
Are heat pumps suitable for all homes?
Heat pumps work best in well-insulated properties. They operate at lower flow temperatures than a traditional gas boiler, which means your home needs to retain heat well and you may need larger radiators or underfloor heating to distribute it effectively.
Older properties with solid walls and limited insulation may need upgrades before a heat pump is the right choice. A proper assessment of your property is important before deciding.
