New hot and cold basin taps fitted and working.

Basin Tap Replacement

The problem

Our customer got in touch about poor hot water flow from their basin tap and a leak underneath the basin. Sealant had been put around the hot tap to try to stop the leak, but unfortunately it hadn’t solved the problem.

Quote and assessment

After looking at the job and giving a quote, the customer was happy for us to supply and fit a brand new set of hot and cold basin taps. Replacing both taps together meant a matching pair and a reliable fix, rather than patching one side and leaving the other to fail later.

The work carried out

  1. Isolating the supply. We isolated the water supply before starting any work.
  2. Removing the old taps. We carefully disconnected the existing pipework and took out both old taps.
  3. Preparing the pipework. The existing copper pipework had been painted. Compression fittings need a clean, smooth surface to seal properly, so we carefully removed the paint and cleaned the pipe before fitting anything.
  4. New connections. We fitted the new compression connections, using jointing compound where appropriate.
  5. Flexible tap connectors. We fitted new 15mm flexible tap connectors, finishing the hot side first and then the cold.
  6. Testing. We turned the water back on, checked every joint for leaks and tested both new taps for flow.
  7. Tidying up. We left the basin and the area around it clean and tidy.

Why the little details matter

Fitting new compression joints straight onto painted pipe is a common reason for slow leaks that appear weeks later. Taking the time to clean the pipe back to bare copper is a small step, but it’s the difference between a joint that looks fine on the day and one that stays sound for years.

The result

A neat, professional installation, taps with good hot water flow, and no more leak under the basin. Most importantly, another happy customer. At MS HEATING AND PLUMBING, we believe it’s the little details that make a big difference.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a leak under my basin tap?

Common causes are worn tap parts, loose or perished connections, or fittings that never sealed properly. Sealant around the tap rarely fixes it, because the leak is usually at the connection underneath.

Why is the hot water flow from my tap so poor?

It can be caused by a worn or partly blocked tap, a restricted connector, or an issue further back in the system. Replacing old taps and connectors often brings good flow back.

Should I replace one tap or both?

If one tap has failed, the other is usually the same age. Replacing both together gives you a matching pair and saves a second call-out when the other one goes.

How do I get a quote for new taps?

Send us clear photos of your basin and taps on WhatsApp, or email them to info@msheatingandplumbing.co.uk, and we’ll come back to you with a quote.
