Full Strip-Down Boiler Service

The job

This was a full strip-down service on a Worcester Bosch Greenstar CDi Classic combination boiler, around 8 years old. It’s a much more detailed job than a standard annual service: we carefully dismantle, inspect and clean the boiler, and replace components where they need it.

The Greenstar CDi Classic was one of Worcester Bosch’s premium boiler ranges, built with high-quality components and known for its reliability and long life. A boiler like this is well worth looking after properly.

What we found

With the front casing off, we could see the inside of the boiler, including the main heat exchanger, fan assembly, ignition components and condensate system. Once we’d dismantled the parts needed to reach the heat exchanger, we found the fan bearing plate was badly deteriorated and had started tearing. This is exactly the kind of issue a thorough inspection uncovers. Left alone, it could have led to further problems with the fan assembly.

The heat exchanger itself wasn’t in especially poor condition, but it still benefited from a proper inspection and clean.

The work carried out

1. Preparation. We protected the customer’s worktops and the area around the boiler, got our tools ready and carried out an initial gas tightness test.
2. Dismantling. After safely isolating the necessary connections, we took apart the components needed to reach the main heat exchanger.
3. Cleaning the heat exchanger. We cleaned the main heat exchanger thoroughly with specialist equipment, removing deposits and rinsing it through.
4. Condensate siphon. We cleaned the condensate siphon and its internal housing.
5. Replacement parts. We fitted a new fan bearing plate, new ignition electrodes and a new heat exchanger gasket.
6. Reassembly. We carefully put the boiler back together, taking extra care with the cleaning of its internal parts.
7. Final checks. We carried out a gas tightness test, working pressure and inlet working pressure checks, the required fan pressure checks and a flue gas analysis, to make sure the boiler is burning correctly to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Standard of work

A strip-down service isn’t just about replacing parts, it’s about the overall standard of workmanship. From start to finish, this service took around three and a half to four hours, including the cleaning, the new parts and the safety checks.

Not every boiler needs this level of servicing or the same replacement parts. It depends on the boiler’s condition and the manufacturer’s requirements.

The result
