A bathroom renovation is one of those projects that homeowners often put off because it feels complicated and disruptive. In reality, with the right planning and a reliable team, it’s very manageable and the results make a significant difference to everyday life.

Here’s the approach we recommend to anyone planning a bathroom.

Start with how you actually use the space

Before thinking about tiles or taps, think about how your bathroom is used day to day. Do you use the bath regularly, or does it mostly collect things? Is there a particular time of morning when everyone needs the bathroom at once? Do you have children or elderly family members with specific needs?

The answers should drive the layout. A bath-to-shower conversion, for example, can transform a family bathroom that was never quite working.

Set a realistic budget

Bathroom renovations vary widely in cost depending on the size of the room, the fixtures chosen and the amount of work involved. Set a budget early and tell your installer what it is. A good bathroom fitter will work with your budget and tell you honestly what’s achievable within it.

Allow a contingency of around 10 to 15 percent for unexpected costs, which can include things discovered once the existing bathroom is removed.

Think about the sequence of work

A bathroom renovation involves multiple trades in a specific order: first fix plumbing, tiling, then final fix plumbing, electrics and finally decoration. Your installer should manage this sequence for you so you don’t have to coordinate individual tradespeople.

Choose your sanitaryware before work starts

Having all fixtures and fittings selected and ordered before the job starts avoids delays mid-project. Your installer can advise on what to order and when.

Plan for being without a bathroom

Most bathroom renovations take three to five days for a standard room. If you have only one bathroom, discuss this with your installer upfront so they can plan the work efficiently and minimise the time you’re without facilities.
