Getting quotes for a new boiler can be confusing when prices vary significantly between companies. Understanding what should be included in a proper installation helps you compare quotes on a like-for-like basis and spot where corners might be being cut.

What a full boiler installation should include

  • Survey and assessment: Before anything is quoted, an engineer should assess your current system, the condition of the pipework, the flue route and whether your existing controls and radiators are compatible with the new boiler.
  • Removal and disposal of the old boiler: The old unit needs to be properly decommissioned and disposed of. Check that this is included rather than left for you to arrange.
  • New boiler installation: Fitting the new boiler, connecting to the gas supply and the heating and hot water circuits, fitting a new flue if required.
  • Controls: A modern boiler should be paired with a compatible thermostat and timer. Many engineers now fit smart controls as standard.
  • System flush: Before connecting the new boiler, the existing system should be flushed to remove any sludge or debris that could damage the new heat exchanger. A magnetic filter should be fitted to protect the boiler going forward.
  • Gas safe certification: All gas work must be certified by a Gas Safe registered engineer. You should receive a certificate on completion.
  • Commissioning and demonstration: The engineer should commission the boiler to the manufacturer’s specification and walk you through how to use it and the controls.

Warranty registration

Many manufacturers offer extended warranties if the boiler is installed and registered by an accredited installer. Make sure this is done as part of your installation.
